Balfes Creek is situated 33 kilometers west of Charters Towers on the Flinders Highway.  It is a former railway station on the Great Northern railway line which had been operating since 1884.  Work had started on the construction of an airfield running parallel to the road and railway in 1942 but even though the earth strip had been cleared and leveled, defense priorities changed and the strip was never sealed.  Chinese markets once flourished there and dairies in the area once supplied Charters Towers with milk but those days have long since passed.

Balfes Creek is in the locality of Campaspe which has a population of around 120 people.  The Balfes Creek Park is a fenced area with playground equipment and disabled amenity facilities.

If you’re adventurous and would like to spend time at Balfes Creek you can stay at the pet-friendly Balfes Creek Hotel Motel Caravan Park where you have the options of powered and unpowered sites for caravans, motorhomes or campers and motel-style accommodation.
